A systematic account and a survey of the results of quantum-chemical and spectroscopic studies of the electronic structure of transition metal cluster complexes are presented. In terms of the theory of canonical molecular orbitals and the theory of weak- and strong-field ligands, the concept of the structure and stability of the clusters taking into account the influence of the ligands and transition metal atoms on the characteristics of the M–M bonds has been formulated. The characteristic features of the delocalisation of the valence electrons of the M atoms in the Mn groups, the intercluster interaction, the density of the M atoms in the clusters, and the effects of cluster formation in the optical and X-ray spectra are discussed.
