Extreme states of matter in the Earth and in space: is there any chemistry beyond the megabar?

Abstract: The results of studies of thermodynamics and transport and optical properties of highly compressed matter at high pressures are analyzed. Experimental methods for cumulation of high energy density, generation of strong shock waves, and fast diagnostics of high-energy plasma are considered. The effects stimulated by compression — pressure-induced ionization, plasma phase transitions, deformation of coupled states, plasma lightening and structure transformation are discussed.
