Biography

I received mathematical education at the PhysTech, more precisely, graduated with an MSc degree from the Department of Control and Applied Mathematics of the Moscow Institute (State University) of Physics and Technology (MIPT), Russia, in 1989 (I did not get a diploma with distinction only because of a 4/5 mark at the state exam on Marxism-Leninism). I earned a PhD degree in Physics and Mathematics from MIPT in 1992 (thesis title: "Analysis and optimization of parameter estimation algorithms for regression models under partial statistical uncertainty"). Prof. D.Sc. I.A.Boguslavskiy (1921-2013) was my academic adviser in 1987-1992. I worked as a Senior Research Associate for the State Research Institute of Aviation Systems in 1993–1997 (in the areas of Kalman filtering, parameter estimation and stochastic robust control with applications to aircraft navigation and control) and the Laboratory of Information and Control Theory at the Institute for Information Transmission Problems, the Russian Academy of Sciences, in 1994–2007 (where I did research on hysteresis and spatially discretized dynamics with applications to the roundoff effects in computer simulations of chaotic systems). In 1993-1994, I was also an external consultant for the information-analytic division of the Interbank Financial House on the development of autoregressive models and forecasting algorithms for foreign currency exchange rates. From 1997 to 2008, I carried out research at the Mathematics Department and School of Engineering at the University of Queensland (where, in addition to the above mentioned topics, I worked in the areas of stochastic modelling of econometric time series, statistical mechanical lattice models of interacting particle systems, and transport phenomena in random media with fractal properties). In 2000, I also did research at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, on p-adic analysis of spatially discretized Hamiltonian systems. Also, in 2000-2002, I carried out consultancy projects for the Pyrometallurgy Research Centre of the University of Queensland on simplex-spline approximation algorithms for chemical thermodynamic data visualization. From 2009 to 2016, I held a Senior Research Fellow position at the University of New South Wales Canberra, working in the areas of stochastic and robust control, entropy theoretic variational problems, and stochastic filtering and control for open quantum systems. From 2017, I work as a Fellow / Senior Research Associate at the Australian National University, Canberra, in the area of quantum stochastic filtering and control. My work was supported at different times by grants of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Australian Research Council, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of UK, and also by a Research and Development grant of the University of Queensland. My major developments in the early and mid 1990s, which I carried out in Russia, are the anisotropy-based theory of stochastic robust control (using intermediate norms in the Hardy spaces of transfer functions, based on an entropy theoretic concept of anisotropy), and a probabilistic approach to spatially discretized dynamical systems (using finitely additive probability measures on quasi-periodic subsets of multidimensional lattices). Being the founder of the anisotropy-based stochastic robust control theory, I was awarded Academician B. N. Petrov prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2013 for works in this area.
