Abstract: Attention is given to an as yet unexplored mechanism of convective instability in two-component media, such as sea water. In general, different substances (for example, heat and salt) are transfered by flows in such media with different velocities depending on their diffusion rate. Therefore, situations with partial segregation of these substances giving rise to convective instability may arise.
