Abstract: An unusual Beckmann rearrangement was discovered in the reaction of 3,4-bis(2,5-dimethyl-3-thienyl)cyclobut-3-ene-1,2-dione with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to give esters of 2,3-bis(2,5-dimethyl-3-thienyl)-3- cyanoacrylic acid.
