Institute of Cosmophysical Researches and Radio Wave Propagation, Far East Division, Russian Academy of Sciences, RussiaInstitute activities Main scientific areas of investigation of the Institute:

physics of solar-terrestrial relations; fundamental problems of radio wave propagation; radio physical and acoustic methods of diagnostics of the environment. The Institute conducts the activities of the Program of Fundamental Scientific Investigations of the State Academies of Sciences for 2013-2020 in the following directions:

Physical Sciences subsection 12 «Modern problems of radio physics and acoustics including fundamental basis of radio physical and acoustic methods of coupling, location and diagnostics, investigation of nonlinear wave phenomena»; subsection 16 «Modern problems of astronomy, astrophysics and investigation of space including origin, structure and evolution of the Universe, nature of dark matter and dark energy, investigation of the Moon and stars, the Sun and solar-terrestrial relations, investigation of exoplanets and search for extra-terrestrial civilizations, development of methods and instrumentation for space astronomy and space research, coordinate-time provision of fundamental investigations and applied tasks». Earth sciences subsection 77(135) «Physical and chemical processes in the atmosphere, including the Earth ionosphere and magnetosphere, cryosphere and on the Earth surface, mechanisms of formations and current changes of climate, landscapes, glacierization and permafrost». Structure of the Institute The Institute includes 5 scientific laboratories, 4 remote geophysical observatories (Mys Shmidta, Khabarovsk, Paratunka, Magadan), 2 year-round expedition sites.

IKIR FEB RAS is the only Institute in Russia which has three magnetic observatories certified as the Observatories of the International INTERMAGNET network ("Magadan" since 2009, "Paratunka" and "Khabarovsk" since 2013). IKIR ionospheric stations ("Magadan", "Paratunka" and "Khabarovsk") conduct the activities according to the URSI Program on the vertical sounding of the ionosphere. Neutron monitors of cosmic rays of «Magadan» and «Mys Shmidta» observatories are included into the international network.

History The Institute was organized according to the Resolution No.80 of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from February 18, 1987 on the basis of five divisions of radio cosmic specialty of north-eastern Complex Scientific Institute (KNII) FEB AS USSR. The Institute included a Department of Earth Electromagnetic Field (Paratunka, Kamchatka region), Ussuriysk Astrophysical Observatory (Gornotayozhnoe, Primorskiy kray), Departments and Laboratories located in Mys Shmidta, Stekol'ny (Magadan oblast'), Zabaykal'skoe (Khabarovsk kray) and on Sakhalin island. In 1992 Ussuriysk Astrophysical Observatory FEB RAS became an independent. In 2006 the Geomagnetic Observatory on Sakhalin Island was mothballed due to the lack of staff.

According to the Resolution No. 1088 of the Central Committee of CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR from September 26, 1987 and the Resolution No. 12 of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR from January 22, 1988, the Far Eastern Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR was reorganized into the Far Eastern Department of the Academy Sciences of the USSR.

Based on the Resolution No. 228 of the President of the RSFSR from November 21, 1991 «On organization of the Russian Academy of Sciences», the Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Radio Wave Propagation, Far Eastern Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR was renamed into the Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Radio Wave Propagation, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to the Resolution No. 274 of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences from December 18, 2007 (On the renaming of Institutions under the jurisdiction of the Russian Academy of Sciences», the Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Radio Wave Propagation, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was renamed into the Institution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Radio Wave Propagation, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Based on the Resolution No. 262 of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences from December 13, 2011, the Institution of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Radio Wave Propagation, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was renamed into the Federal State Budget Institution, Institute of Cosmophysical Research and Radio Wave Propagation, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
