A flexible optical cell with variable transmittance based on tungsten trioxide

Abstract:
We describe the design of an optical cell with a fundamentally new sensitive layer based on tungsten oxide, which sharply changes its optical transmittance in the visible range depending on the applied dc voltage. The mechanism of cell action is explained by simultaneously operative electro-chromic and electro-optic effects. The cell working life corresponds up to about 1 million switching cycles.
