Abstract:
The ultimate tensile strength of monatomic carbon chains has been determined using the method of high-field mechanical loading in a field-ion microscope. The maximum strength of monatomic carbon chains (181 GPa) experimentally observed at 77 K amounts to about 70% of the value calculated for an ideal chain and significantly exceeds the tensile strength of well-known carbon materials, including carbon nanotubes and graphene.
