Characteristics of backscattering in fiber waveguides

A rigorous ray approach is used to obtain analytic relationships between the characteristics of the forward and backward Rayleigh-scattered radiation in multimode fiber waveguides with an arbitrary refractive index profile. Experimental results obtained for step and graded index fiber waveguides are shown to be in agreement with the calculated dependences.
