Surface photorefractive effect in a lithium niobate crystal

Abstract: A discovery was made of a large irreversible change in the refractive index (Δn≈–0.2) occurring in a surface layer about 30 nm thick under the action of high-power ultraviolet laser radiation (wavelength 249 nm, pulse duration 5 nsec, power density 20 MW/cm2).
