Relative Strength of CH Acids

A. I. Shatenshtein, I. O. Shapiro

Karpov Institute of Physical Chemistry, Moscow
Abstract: The problem of the differentiating action of solvents on the relative strength of acids is examined from the point of view of the modern theory of acid–base equilibrium, according to which hydrocarbons and their derivatives behave under appropriate conditions as acids. Methods are described for determining the strength of such CH acids. The factors on which the differentiating effect of solvents depends are discussed. The most detailed consideration is given to the question – newly posed in the literature – of the possible causes of the change in the relative kinetic acidity of CH acids produced by solvents, which has been established by measuring the rate of the protophilic isotopic exchange of the hydrogen in them with bases. The bibliography contains 110 references.
