Abstract:
The influence of pressure on the efficiency of a chromatographic column and on the selectivity of the stationary phase has been investigated. The role of pressure gradients along the column has been demonstrated. It is shown that the efficiency can be drastically increased by turbulence in the carrier gas stream. A special study is made of the use of eluents under supercritical conditions, which permits involatile compounds with a molecular weight up to 4000000 to migrate along the column. The use of chromatography in studies of non-ideality in the gas phase is discussed. In particular, we have considered the determination of the second mixed virial coefficients in the equation of state for the gas, and the non-ideality corrections needed to determine the activity coefficients of solutes. 115 references.
