Thermodynamics of the Interaction of the Lanthanides with Other Elements

A. P. Bayanov

Kuban State University, Krasnodar
Abstract: The thermodynamic characteristics (Gibbs free energies, enthalpies, and entropies) of the interaction of the lanthanides with various elements to form binary compounds and solid or liquid alloys are described. The dissociation energies of gaseous compounds are briefly analysed and experimental and calculated data are compared. The variation of the thermodynamic characteristics of the compounds in the lanthanum–lutetium series is considered from the standpoint of the electronic structures of the components. The thermodynamic behaviour of europium and yttrium in relation to the other lanthanides is discussed.
