The Orientation of Nematic Liquid Crystals

The methods for the homeotropic, filted, and homogeneous alignment of nematic liquid crystals on solid supports are examined. A systematic account is given of the literature on chemical orientation agents and methods for the formation of anisotropic orienting surfaces. The physicochemical and anisotropic-elastic mechanisms of the alignment of liquid crystals on solid supports are discussed.
