Abstract: The existing approaches to the chemical design of multiferroic materials are described in detail. The structural and functional features of the known homogeneous multiferroics and the latest advances in the field of multiferroics are considered. The features of synthesis of composite magnetoelectrics with specified properties are considered separately. The special emphasis is made on epitaxial stabilization as a key method for the production of new magnetoelectric materials and controlled change of their physical properties. The bibliography includes 218 references.
