This issue of the journal was prepared on the initiative of former students of Academician Arlen Il’in, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of his birth.
The laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Arlen Mikhailovich Il’in belonged to the wonderful cohort of Soviet and Russian mathematics who worked at the time when mathematics was indeed the ‘queen of the sciences’, being a mathematician was a proud occupation, and to ‘become a mathematician’ was a dream for many youths. Il’in was both a ‘product’ of that time and a heir of this famous predecessors, striving for extending the ‘glorious epoch of Russian mathematics’ as long as possible. The results of his studies, part of which were published in his well-known monograph, have long been considered classical.
Inspired by the remarkable lecturers before him, he himself became an unrivalled expert in students’ education. He put a great effort to ‘nurturing’ his students, and expected from them selfless service to the science, akin to his own.
In questions of crucial importance for science and its organization he was adamant and ready to defend his ideas at all levels, which was not an obstacle to having many friends and being a reliable and caring companion. As many mathematicians of his time, he was fond of camping, guitar singing, good humour and conversations with interesting people.
This is how his students and colleagues will remember him.
