Effect of a strong localized disturbance on the properties of an arc in the axial flow of a gas

Abstract: An experimental study was made of the effect of a breakdown transverse to an arc that is burning in the laminar core of a free jet. A number of distinct stages and spatial regions are identified which characterize the diverse properties of the absorption of the energy supplied and the liberation of the excess energy of the arc. The results are explained by considering the MHD interaction of the arc plasma with the surrounding gas.
