Numerical simulation of high-speed jet impact on a rigid body

Abstract:
A technique is presented for numerical studying of the liquid jet impact on the surface layer of an elastic-plastic body under conditions close to cavitation damage. The technique comprises three stages. First, assuming that the body is perfectly rigid, the shock-wave dynamics in the jet and surrounding gas is calculated and the law of pressure variation on the body surface is derived. Then, the derived law is approximated by splines and simple analytic expressions. The obtained approximation is used to determine the fields of stresses in the surface layer of the body and deformations of its surface. The proposed approach is illustrated by computing the impact of high-speed water jet on the rigid body out of nickel alloy.
