Abstract: The paper describes the main results obtained in the theory of transcendental numbers by the outstanding scientist, specialist in the field of number theory A. O. Gelfond, who was the head of the Chair of Mathematical Analysis and Number Theory of Moscow State University for many years, a wonderful teacher who created a large and fruitful school in this field, the results of his students and followers who worked and are working not only in our country, but also in many other countries.
Key words: transcendental number, algebraic independence, degree of transcendence.
