Stimulated Brillouin scattering in an acoustic resonator

Abstract:
An analysis is made of the formation of a stimulated Brillouin scattering wave in an acoustic resonator. The condition for excitation and amplification of the wave is found by jointly solving equations for the field and the medium. It is shown that for a given radiation power, the scattering angle is uniquely related to the dimensions of a resonator having end walls which partially or completely reflect acoustic waves. In this case, the larger the transverse dimension of the resonator, the smaller is the angular width of the scattered radiation and the intensity of the scattered radiation increases nonlinearly as this dimension increases.
