The journal "Fundamentalnaya i prikladnaya matematika" (Fundamental and Applied Mathematics) was founded in 1995 by the Center of New Information Technologies of the Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Until 2003 the journal contained sections for surveys, research papers, short communications, mathematical enlightenment, and the mathematical life. Usually the papers of an issue did not belong to one area, although from time to time there were special anniversary issues dedicated to prominent mathematicians. Since 2003 every issue is dedicated to some area of mathematics.

Until 2005 new issues of the journal appeared 4 times a year, now they appear 8 times a year.

Since 2003 new issues of the journal are translated into English.
