  • Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics, Dubna, Moscow Region, RussiaThe Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics (BLTP) is part of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), a major center involving many experimental facilities of nuclear and high energy physics in Russia. The BLTP is working as an independent research institution in theoretical physics and is also in contact with the experimental Laboratories at the JINR. The main activities are concentrated in the areas of quantum field and elementary particle theory, theoretical nuclear physics and condensed matter theory. The strengths of the Laboratory include the possibility of carrying out interdisciplinary research in theoretical physics and the close interaction between theorists and experimentalists.

The BLTP has traditionally been the home of the prominent Russian schools in quantum field theory, theoretical nuclear physics, and statistical physics founded by Blokhintsev, Bogoliubov and Markov. Furthermore, the Joint Institute is a unique center of international cooperation, especially for countries of the former Soviet Union (FSU) as well as Eastern European and some Asian countries.

The Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics is currently increasing its international contacts. Collaboration with research centers of Germany is being developed in the framework of the Heisenberg-Landau program. The agreements for collaboration between the BLTP and the ICTP, scientific centers of France and Italy are functioning. The JINR is also strengthening its connections with Russian institutions and other contries of the FSU.

The JINR in Dubna has been a popular site for international conferences and summer schools. Its excellent infrastructure, convenient location (120 km north of Moscow and 70 km of the International Sheremetyevo airport) on the bank Volga river and picturesque surroundings make it an outstanding place in Russia for hosting international meetings. Regularly the BLTP is organizing a series of conferences on different topics in theoretical physics.

An important part of the JINR activities is connected with the education and training of young scientists and students. The JINR has established a special training center for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, with members of the BLTP staff participating in the teaching process. About 30 graduate students have completed their doctoral theses at the BLTP for the last three years. Many of the senior staff are supervising doctoral theses, 10 professors of the staff are giving lectures at Moscow, Tver and Ivanovo State Universities and others Educational Institutions. Computer facilities of the BLTP have been upgraded to international standards (PC-network, workstations). Via the JINR network our Laboratory is connected with all major world electronic communication networks. The Institute also has its own publishing facilities.
