Curvature, spinning tops, Jacobi fields and ponderomotive magnetism

I will describe some counterintuitive effects in mechanics some of which can be explained through differential geometry and some of which are still not fully understood. In particular I will point out the role of Gaussian curvature in the dynamics of the Lagrange top, and a heuristic connection with Jacobi fields.
