Archimedes and his burning mirrors

The famous mathematician Archimedes is also known as the discoverer of war engines, which he used on the time of the Roman siege of Syracusa. We are told that among them were burning mirrors, by means of which he destroyed Roman warships. Is this really a historical fact or merely a forgery?
