Abstract: The paper is a review of spline theory development and the role of S. B. Stechkin in this process. The author emphasizes the extremal problems posed by S. B. Stechkin, which were solved by means of splines. A series of important directions of further development of spline theory and its application in approximation theory and numerical analysis are pointed out.
