1. General

The Journal deals with fundamental problems of theoretical and mathematical physics and publishes papers on the following topics:

• mathematical problems of quantum mechanics;
• quantum field theory and mathematical aspects of elementary particle theory;
• quantum scattering theory, the inverse problem method;
• mathematical problems of statistical physics;
• gravitation, gauge fields, theory of strings and membranes;
• super symmetries;
• completely integrable, related, and quantum models;
• algebraic, geometrical, and other mathematical methods of modern theoretical physics.

Phenomenological and pure calculation papers are not published.

The journal publishes original scientific papers up to 15 journal pages (20 typewritten pages) in length and reviews requested by the Editorial Board. Proceedings of conferences can also be published (see below).

The Editorial Board invites the cooperation of authors in the publication of papers by request. Well-grounded proposals of authors will be considered by the Editorial Board.

The journal is published in two versions: an original Russian version ("Teoreticheskaya i matematicheskaya fizika") and its English translation ("Theoretical and Mathematical Physics"). Translation and distribution of the English version is undertaken by the Plenum Publishing Co. In addition, computer versions of the summaries of journal papers are planned to be included in the database of the Mathematics Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences (see section 5).

Submission of a manuscript to the journal implies that the described results have not been published elsewhere (except in abstracts, rapid communications, or lectures), that these results do not make up the content of another paper submitted to another journal, that publication of theresults is approved by all co-authors, if any, and that publication of the paper does not raise rightful objections of the institutions where the investigation has been carried out. The responsibility for fulfillment ofthe above conditions rests with the author. No letters or any other documents proving compliance of the manuscript with the above conditionsare required.

Submitted papers and summaries are refereed and considered at a session of the Editorial Board. The selection criteria are correspondence to the topics of the journal, novelty, current importance, and substantiation of the results. The necessary conditions are comprehensible and clear language. The authors are informed of the Editorial Board's decision. If the paper is rejected, the authors receive a notice with the relevant reasons. The Editorial Board does not regard disputing with the authors as a must. Manuscripts are not returned.

Papers both in Russian and in English are considered. Papers in English accepted for publication are translated into Russian to be published in the Russian version of the journal.

The papers accepted for publication are edited. The Editorial Board normally consults with authors as to corrections far from merely grammatical ones. The Editorial Board is unable to send proofs to the authors.

Submission of a manuscript to the journal, if the manuscript is accepted for publication, means that the authors entrust the Editorial Board with the power to represent their interests in all matters concerning the use of the published paper, its copying and reproduction in any form, including translation into another language and publication of the translation.

The decision to publish the proceedings of conferences is taken by the Editorial Board on submission from the Organizing Committee. Refereeing and compliance with other conditions are the subject of a special contract between the Editorial Board and the Organizing Committee.

Authors are sent 25 reprints of their published paper in Russian and 10 in English.

2. Requirements for submitted papers

Two copies of the paper are to be submitted to the Editorial Board, prepared as described in section 3. The paper must be signed by the authors and visaed "for publication".

The paper should normally be prepared in one of the standard TeX formats. As an exception, typewritten or computer-typed papers with hand-written formulas are accepted (see formula mark-up rules below). No software other than TeX is allowed for writing formulas. Typing parts of formulas is not allowed,either.

The paper must not contain references to unpublished papers whose results are used in proofs.

Supplied on separate sheets are:

• particulars about each of the authors: first name, patronymic, family name, full name of institution, mail address with mailcode, telephone number with the town or area code, e-mail address, address for scientific contacts, to be published in the journal (the author to be in contact with the editor must also be indicated);
• abstract (with the title of the paper, initials and names of the authors);
• key words.

The Editorial Board insists that authors:

• provide an English version of the particulars indicated above;
• write the initials and names of the authors of the paper, all other initials and names mentioned in the paper, including references, in a way adopted in Western publications with appropriate spelling (not transliterated);
• use the table in the Appendix for transliteration of Russian names.

A summary of the paper prepared in compliance with section 5 is to be supplied for storage in the server.

3. Preparation of manuscripts

Observing the following rules will noticeably speed up publication of the paper.

General guidelines:

• the first page must carry the initials and names of the authors, the title of the paper, and the abstract, followed by the bulk of the text;
• equations should be numbered consecutively through the paper or through each section (double numbering); theorems, lemmas, etc., are numbered similarly;
• numbered formulas must be displayed on a separate line;
• footnotes are numbered consecutively through the paper by Arabic numerals;
• all acknowledgments of assistance and financial support must be expressed in the last paragraph of the Conclusion;
• references are numbered consecutively through the paper by Arabic numerals in square brackets in the line (see the rules in section 4).

Figures:

• figures must be supplied on separate sheets (in two copies);
• authors names and the number of the figure must be written on the reverse side of each figure;
• the place of a figure must be marked off in colored pencil in the margin where it is first mentioned in the text;
• a minimum of lettering should be used in the figures;
• explanations should appear only in captions;
• if all objects displayed in the figure can be represented analytically in Cartesian and/or polar coordinates, it is recommended to provide a "Functional Description of Figures" on separate sheets (which will noticeably improve the figure printing quality);
• figures made with a laser, jet or matrix printer are accepted if the necessary intensity and line thickness is maintained.

Computer-written papers:

At present, the lay-out of the journal is prepared on a computer with TeX publishing software. The authors who use versions of this software (LaTeX, AmSTeX, AmSLaTeX) must bear in mind that

• the text must be typed in accordance with the rules described in standard manuals, e.g.,
  M. Spivak.  The Joy of TeX. Providence, Rhode Island: AMS Publ.,1990,
  adhering to the style amsppt.sty, and
  L. Lamport. LaTeX. A Document Preparation System, Massachusetts: Addison--Wesley, 1983;
• maximum line length in the file must be not more than 78 characters;
• the spacing must be specified by the instruction \baselineskip=20pt and the page size by the instructions \hsize=340pt and \vsize=490pt. At these parameters, a page typed with TeX approximately corresponds to a standard typewritten page. A paper 20 typewritten pages long makes up a file of about 35 kilobytes;
• the paper must be printed out with 144% magnification (in this case the size of printout letters approximately corresponds to the size of typewritten letters). With a letter-quality printer, e.g., a laser or jet, 120% magnification is allowed;
• apart from the hard copy of the paper, the corresponding file should be sent to the editor's office at the e-mail address tmph@mi.ras.ru;
• the file must not differ from the hard copy of the submitted paper(it is the hard copy, not the file, that is considered the official submission for publication;
• the TeX-typed papers should not be marked up for printing;
• it is also desirable that electronic versions of figuresbe supplied in oneof the standard vector or bit map formats: PCX, EPS, TIFF, GIF, HPGL, etc., the preferable resolution for figures being 600dpi;
• if other software is used (ChiWriter, Word, etc.), the Editorial Board will appreciate receiving a file of that paper as well.

Typewritten papers:

• the material should be typed double-spaced on white A4 paper, using one side only, with wide (4 cm) left and top margins;
• a page must carry not more than 30 lines of 60--65 characters each;
• no pasted or hand-written material is allowed in the text;
• all formulas and mathematical symbols in the text must be written clearly, freely, and in a large font (lower-case letters not smaller than 6 mm, capital letters not smaller than 8 mm, indices notsmaller than 3 mm);
• lettering must be marked as follows:

• capital and lower-case letters of the same shape in pencil (capital letters with two lines underneath, lower-case letters with two lines above), all Greek letters underlined with one line in red pencil, all Gothic letters encircled in blue pencil, and manuscript lower-case Latin letters encircled in yellow pencil;
• superscripts and exponents marked in pencil with a lifting sign $\cup$ and subscripts with a lowering sign $\cap$ (subordinate indices,i.e., indices of indices marked with second lifting or lowering signs respectively);
• mathematical symbols such as lim, log, max, sin, Im, etc., and the number 0 marked with a square bracket underneath; the letter "O", as opposed to zero, underlined with a wavy line. To denote the real straight line and the complex plane, the "skeleton type" letters $\R$ and$\C$ are recommended;

• it must be possible to distinguish between the letters J, I, unity (1), and a vertical line |, between the prime "'" and the comma "," in indices, and between the letters e and l; in case a symbol may cause doubt, the authors are asked to pencil the name of the symbol in the margin, e.g.$\xi$ - xi, $\zeta$ - zeta,etc. The summation and product signs, asopposed to the Greek letters $\Sigma$and $\Pi$, are not underlined in red pencil;
• a wavy line is used to underline formulations of theorems, lemmas, and corollaries (except formulas and their numbers);
• the end of the formulation of a statement, remark, example, etc., is marked with a square $\Box$.

4. References

At present, the publishers of both the Russian and English version simpose severe requirements on bibliographical references because the published papers are included in different databases. Therefore, the Editorial Board insists that the authors indicate the following in each reference, apart from the initials and the names of the authors (the initials precede the name):

• for journal publications: the title of the journal, volume, issue (this can be avoided in the case of consecutive pagination in a journal within the volume), beginning page number, and year of issue;
• for papers submitted for publication: the title of the paper, title of the journal, and year of submission;
• for preprints: the title, number of the preprint, institute (university) that published the preprint, city and year of publication;
• for papers submitted to hep-th or any other electronic database: the title of the paper, name and registration number in this database, year of submission;
• for papers included in collections and books: the title of the paper, beginning page number, full references for books;
• for books: the title, volume number and title (if any), publisher, city (cities), year of publication;
• for collections: apart from the full reference for books, the initials and name of the editor (editors) must be given:
• for theses: the title of the thesis, degree awarded, institute (university), city and year of presentation;
• for private communications: the year.

The Editorial Board would appreciate receiving the following data from the authors:

• for a reference to translated (into Russian) printed matter (book): a full reference for the original edition in the original European language;
• for cited papers published in Russian in a Russian or Soviet journal: a full reference to the translated version, if any (in translated versions, the pagination usually differs from the original);
• for cited books first published in Russian: a full reference to the translation (if it exists and the author is aware of it) of this book into English or other European languages.

5. Summaries

The Mathematics Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences is establishing an electronic database for the journals of the Division. It is planned that the database will hold information on the editorial board, the journals,addresses of editor's offices, subscription information,contents of journals issued, and brief information onpublished papers. In this connection, the Editorial Boardasks authors to submit a SUMMARY with their papers for storage in the above database. The summary must meet the following requirements:

• the length of the summary should be not more than one typewritten page (about two kilobytes of information), prepared as prescribed for manuscripts;
• the summary begins with the following data about the authors: name and initials, affiliation (in the following order: country, mailcode, city, street, address (building number), institution, department), telephone number, e-mail address;
• the summary must correctly describe the main content of the paper (it will be refereed together with the paper), be titled and have the UDK index (can be dropped in the English version);
• given at the end of the summary are the number of references in the paper and the list of key words (not more than 10) with their English equivalents;
• no references to papers or the list of references are allowed in the summary.

If there is no summary, the following information on the paper is entered in the database: the title of the journal, imprint of the paper, title of the paper, initials and name of the author (authors), and the abstract.
