Relationship between algebra and geometry of algebraic groups

The existence of a relationship between the group properties of algebraic groups and the geometric properties of their underlying varieties has long been noted: a classic example is given by the theorem on the commutativity of a connected algebraic group whose underlying variety is projective. The purpose of this talk is to discuss this relationship.
